Gary has been conducting workshops in many different communities throughout the world. In 1987, after launching 'Puppets Against Aids' in South Africa, he ran workshops in community organisations, spreading the messages even further, using peer group educators.
During the nine years that followed, Gary and his team conducted puppetry-in-education workshops through Africa, Canada, Europe, the United States and Australia, empowering communities to develop their own puppetry-in-education programmes.

'Puppets in Prison' resulted from intense workshops for long-term prisoners. Prison outreach programmes were created to examine the many social issues, which were related to their lives behind bars. | |
One workshop success was the training of Kenyan puppeteers in 1994, for the FPPS in Nairobi. This group trained another 400 regional puppeteers over the following eight years, in close collaboration with Gary. Today they are still engaged in puppetry outreach programmes throughout the East African region. In 2002, they produced their first international puppetry festival, which was held in Nairobi.

In the late 1990's, 'Exercise in Darkness' was produced with a Cape Town Holocaust survivor, Hela Blumenthal and an American historical researcher, Stephanie Marlin-Curiel, who were brought together to workshop holocaust issues using the media of light and darkness. |

Gary is also currently involved in teaching visual theatre and puppetry workshops in Australia, working mainly at Tafe Enmore and Sydney Film School, but also in community groups, high schools and universities.
