Looking for a Monster
A metaphorical exploration of the abuse of power, of evil as seen through the eyes of a thirteen year-old boy in the Terezin Ghetto in 1943. A mysterious meeting takes place between the boy and a puppeteer of today, who accidentally gets locked inside the Concentration Camp of Auschwitz, in Poland.
"Looking for a Monster" directed by Guy Willoughby, opened at the Jewish Museum in Cape Town in November 2001 and was headlined at the International Puppet Theatre Festival in Nairobi, Kenya in February 2003. It is currently being re-designed for an international tour later this year.
A documentary film of "Looking for a Monster" is currently being filmed internationally and will be due for release in 2006.

"Gary Friedman is brilliant as the prime mover for the entire cast of puppets, ably assisted by Aja Marneweck and Luigi Preite. The piece is a sober reminder of the power of the arts to comment on the human condition across time and geography, resonating as it does with the human history of this country. It is highly recommended."

"It is a unique and highly emotive performance. Gary is a master puppeteer. And when, at the start, he breathes life into the paper puppet figure of his young hero, Hanush, he holds you in thrall."Irma Chiat, Cape Jewish Chronicle, South Africa, January 2002
